Peter Cohen's story begins when he purchased his California home in 1988, when he encountered two outdoor feral cats. Tragically, both cats were hit by cars, leading Cohen to decide to keep the surviving cat as an indoor pet. To provide her with companionship, he adopted more cats from shelters, sparking his dedication to cat rescue. This marked the beginning of his journey, gradually expanding his family of rescue cats to 15. Each cat such as Cheesecake, Chocolate and Nutter Butter was adopted from various shelters in California, contributing to his mission of providing a haven for these animals.

To accommodate and entertain his growing family of cats, Peter Cohen transformed his home into a whimsical indoor playground. This involved constructing intricate catwalks, tunnels, platforms and perches, creating a unique environment where the cats could roam and play freely. He designed numerous interconnected structures, using vibrant colors and architectural elements such as spirals and bridges to stimulate himself and his cats. The presence of these features allows for late-night chases that echo through the house, living a testament to his commitment to creating an engaging home for his furry companions.

Maintaining a home with 15 cats presented significant challenges. Peter Cohen devised clever solutions to manage litter and cleanliness, installing nearly two dozen litter boxes equipped with ventilating fans to minimize odors. Additionally, five Roombas patrol the home daily, efficiently handling cat hair and keeping the space tidy. Living with these rescue cats gradually shifted his perception from wanting to remove them to treasuring each one, acknowledging the joy and companionship they bring.

A particularly touching story involves one of his cats, Cookie, who faced a health scare when enormous tumors were discovered. Despite an initial cancer diagnosis and a grim prognosis, Peter Cohen proceeded with surgeries, which miraculously revealed the tumors to be benign. Cookie's recovery underscores the resilience and unexpected joys of living with rescue animals. The experience exemplifies Peter Cohen's dedication to his cats and the satisfaction he finds in providing a loving home for each of them.

Beyond just being pets, Peter Cohen's cats offer therapeutic benefits, providing stress relief and tranquility in his home. He finds solace in their calming presence and affection, especially when they purr beside him after a long day. The koi pond is a popular spot for the cats, who are mesmerized by watching fish, further highlighting the harmony between cat and environment within this thoughtfully designed living space. Peter Cohen embraces the notion that while he may not change the world, he can make a significant difference for his rescue cats, offering them a fulfilling and safe life.
